ADMISSIONS - Prerequisites & corequisites

Prerequisites

Taft College accepts twenty-four qualified students into its’ Dental Hygiene Program each fall semester. There are minimum admission requirements that all applicants must meet in order to be considered for acceptance into the program.

The application period for the fall is January 1 through March 31. Prerequisites to the program must be completed by December 31 of the preceding year in order to apply for the following fall class.

Applicants must earn a minimum grade of "C" in each of the following prerequisite courses:

Anatomy 6 (Human Anatomy) 4 units
Biology 15 (Basic Nutrition) 3 units
Chemistry 8 & 9 (Organic Chemistry & Lab) 5 units
Microbiology 8 (General Microbiology) 4 units
Physiology 7 & 7L (Human Physiology & Lab) 5 units
English 1A (Composition & Reading) 3 units

All science courses (Anatomy 6, Biology 15, Chemistry 8 & 9, Microbiology 8, and Physiology 7 & 7L) must be completed within the last seven (7) years in order to meet the seven year recency requirement.

A combination Anatomy and Physiology course may not be substituted for the Anatomy and Physiology requirement.

Corequisites

The following courses are Corequisites to the program and may be completed either prior to entering the program or after the applicant is admitted to the program.

Psychology 1A (General Psychology) 3 units
Sociology 1 (Introduction to Sociology)
    Or
Sociology 3 (Minority Group Relations) 3 units
Speech 7 (Group Discussion)
    Or
Speech 11 (Public Speaking) 3 units

Applicants must hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 in all college coursework.

Coursework completed at another institution must be equivalent to the courses offered at Taft College. A Taft College Counselor/Advisor or the Academic Policies and Procedures Committed will determine equivalency.
